In December, I held a forum at Landis Homes on scams aimed at our seniors. U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan discussed Medicare scams and what seniors can do to avoid becoming victims. Meehan said the best way to avoid being scammed is to use common sense. Never give personal information – like your Social Security number, credit card numbers, bank information or anything that identifies you – to anyone you do not know.

Nancy O’Connor, regional administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services encouraged seniors who need help making changes to their Medicare coverage to call Medicare’s toll free number 800-MEDICARE to reach staff who can help them 24 hours a day or visit Medicare’s Web site at Medicare.gov.  There, seniors will find tools to help them select a 60-plus prescription plan by entering the names of the medications they use. Ms. O’Connor also suggested that seniors on fixed incomes apply to the Social Security Administration for Extra Help, a program that will pay up to $3,300 a year for prescription costs.

Jacqueline Burch, executive director of the Lancaster County Office of Aging said her agency can provide seniors with one-on-one telephone counseling on Medicare eligibility benefits, supplemental insurance, HMOs and long term insurance. Ms. Burch said consultation is also available to help seniors select a health care plan and to provide information on PACE and PACENET. For more information, seniors can call the Office of Aging at (717) 299-7979 or stop by at 150 N. Queen Street in Lancaster.
